Do you know of any workarounds to suppress the Downloads box in Safari? It is honestly the only thing that bugs me about it.

I've tried using Glims, but it's too much of a hassle to play around with all of the settings. I don't care about all the extra features. I just want the box to go away.

Glims isn’t designed for Safari 5 or Lion (yet?). I don’t know of a way to bring back the Downloads window as of yet. There may be a hidden setting that can be unleashed with a ‘defaults write’ command as beta versions of Lion included Safari that had both the Downloads window and the new iPad-like method.

what browser would you suggest to use on a mac?

Safari. There’s some pretty dope plugins these days.

I'm using Safari on my PC (just till I can afford a mac of my own). I absolutely love the browser but it can't really handle my multi-tab browsing style. Anything I can do to keep it from crashing when I have many tabs open (ex. going through tumblr posts)?

I’d start looking at your plugins as the suspects. Safari (and other modern browsers) are pretty stable. It’s plugins that will rock the boat.

I have Google Chrome and Safari on my Macbook Pro. And both don't let me open up urls with hyphens in the name. Like example-.tumblr.com or -testing.tumblr.com. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to fix this.
albertsnothere asked

Is this only with leading or trailing hyphens? I’m actually not sure that leading or trailing hyphens are within spec for URLs, which could be why they’re not working.

Hello, I own a baby macbook pro, it's not even one years old. However, Safari crashes a lot these days, especially when it is running more than one tabs. When I quit and open again it does better but in couple of seconds it crashes again.
thanks in advance..

If you look in the Console (/Utilities/Console), you may see some information when it crashes that can help track down where the issue lays.

Close Safari, then locate and delete the following files and it should be gone:

/Library/Application Support/Conduit
/Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
/Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
/Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg
/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle
/Users/<User name>/Library/Application Support/Conduit

where / is the root library on your Hard Disk.

If you are running Snow Leopard you should also look here:

Library/launchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist
Library/Application support/conduit plugins

Apple - Safari - Safari Extensions Gallery
Yesterday Apple updated Safari to 5.0.1 and gave it the ability to include official support for extensions. Up until now, Safari extensions have been relegated to “unsupported” status. Now Apple’s embraced it with a new gallery of them.
As a side note, you’re going to want to update to 5.0.1 as it quashes a nasty security hole.

Hello! I just recently got a new Macbook Pro and everything is running smoothly but I noticed a few days ago that when I'm using Safari, the image previews don't show up when I'm trying to look up Google Images. This was working well before so I'm not really sure if I accidentally changed one of my preferences to make this happen. I hope it's a simple fix that you can help me out with! Thanks for you time (:

I’d try emptying your cache and cookies. Go to the Safari menu and select Reset Safari. In the box that pops up, uncheck all the boxes except for the ones to clear your cache and cookies.

Then give it a go again. A lot of browser issues (regardless of what browser) can be solved by clearing out these two.

Is there a way to open individual bookmarks in a tab instead of opening in the latest page I have open?
chapleau-deactivated20100918-de asked

Absolutely. Just hold down the Command key when you’re clicking on bookmarks in Safari. It works on bookmarks in your bookmark bar as well as in your bookmark menu.
