Do you know of any workarounds to suppress the Downloads box in Safari? It is honestly the only thing that bugs me about it.

I've tried using Glims, but it's too much of a hassle to play around with all of the settings. I don't care about all the extra features. I just want the box to go away.

Glims isn’t designed for Safari 5 or Lion (yet?). I don’t know of a way to bring back the Downloads window as of yet. There may be a hidden setting that can be unleashed with a ‘defaults write’ command as beta versions of Lion included Safari that had both the Downloads window and the new iPad-like method.

So if I bought my Macbook Pro before Lion was released, Do I still have to buy it or what ?
maineholdup asked

Hit up Apple’s Up-to-Date program. Basically, if you bought a Mac from Apple after 6 June and you don’t have Lion yet, you’ll get it for free.

whats up with the whole adobe and Lion problem?
i can't use my webcam on sites like Tumblr, tinychat, or Roboto cause the preference pane for it isn't even click-able

If you ask me, Adobe didn’t prepare for Lion properly. I’m sure there will be forthcoming updates that will make the Flash plug-in 100% compatible.

John Siracusa over at Ars Technica gave Lion a crazy in depth (19 pages!) look. Go see what you get for $29.

I bought a new imac last September, so it's not even a year old yet. I was wondering if it was worth upgrading to Lion or sticking with Snow Leopard? Also, what would the benefits be to upgrading to Lion?

Performance-wise, I think you’ll be fine as long as you’ve got at least 2GB of RAM in it. I have an iMac from 2009 at home and it’s been running Lion just fine.

As far as benefits to upgrading, see Apple’s page here to get an idea of what it’ll give you. If you ask me, it’s well worth the $30.

if i buy a macbook after Lion is released, will the macbook already be pre-installed with Lion or would i still have to purchase Lion off the App Store since theres no actual physical copies of Lion being sold?
omgitsminty asked

Apple will likely employ its “Up-To-Date” program once again. This is for folks caught in the “gap” who recently purchased a Mac (before Lion’s release) or purchased a Mac just after its release and the OS isn’t included in the box.

In the past, you’ve just submitted your receipt and they sent you the OS for a small shipping fee. Likely this time around you’ll submit your receipt and they’ll just email you a redemption code for the App Store.

I know how Lion is going to fully take advantage of RAM and perform amazingly there, but how much will the processor affect it? Could you hint at how well it'll run on my 2.26 GHz white MacBook with 4GB of RAM?

Unless Apple’s worked some magic (fully possible) I’d say “meh.” You’re really going to want something with discrete graphics, in my opinion.

Now, I may be totally shocked, but I ran the development builds all the way to the release version on my 3 year old MacBook Pro (like this) for work and it was just “ok.” Granted, I’m sure there’s still optimization left to do.

For comparison, my new MacBook Pro came in to work last week, a 15” with a quad-core i7 and 8GB of RAM. It. Screams. (Though there’s still some glitchy-ness that needs to be worked out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see 10.7.1 within the month.)

Tomorrow I’ll be out from under my NDA. Let the Lion questions begin.

Posted 10 months ago
Should I upgrade to Lion tomorrow? I've been growing more and more reluctant as I've read more reviews. I love snow Leopard, especially spaces and exposé, but I'm a little worried Launchpad and Mission Control will be a bit too much. I'm already use Quicksilver so Launchpad seems obsolete right off the bat because it will be slower than my Command-Space-->letter-->enter maneuver, which takes all of two seconds. Mission Control just seems like it will be overwhelming and things will pile up quickly.

Thoughts?

Mission Control: Awesome.

Launchpad: Not so much. (But you don’t have to use it… I don’t.)
