im trying to upload images on to tumblr and facebook from iphoto but as soon as i get to the upload menu i cant access the images inside the library: is there a way of doing it without transporting each image to the desktop every time?

When you’re in iPhoto, I believe if you have the photo you want to upload selected you can right-click on it and pick “Show in Finder.” This will pop up a Finder window with your photo selected. Then, when you’re uploading to Tumblr, just drag the photo to the “browse” button.

The reason you can’t pick photos inside of your iPhoto library is because Apple’s made it a “bundle” now. Pretty much it’s to keep it from being mucked with.

Depending on how you’re saving your PSDs (with layers??) iPhoto may puke on them. OS X (and by extension iPhoto) can read simple PSDs but I’m pretty sure it has trouble with more complex ones like those with layers.

You probably are going to want to export to a different file format to get it back into iPhoto (hi-res JPG is most compatible with everything).

I was looking through my Finder Folders and i clicked on iphoto images and just browsed through them. Then I went to my Iphoto and almost all of my events are gone! I tried restarting my mac and everything. The pictures are still on my computer if I look in "all images" but they are no longer in my iphoto sorted into events and edited. I didn't do anything in iphoto to do this, can you help me??

I used to be able to upload pictures on facebook from iphoto. Recently I tired it, and it won't even let me pass through the iphoto icon when I try to go to an iphoto file from facebook. My iphoto just suggests me to use Facebook export program that is already built in the iphoto.
Is there anyway to go back to how I use to upload it from facebook?

Apple changed the format of the iPhoto library so that now it appears as one file. There’s pros and cons to this, but you’ve run into one of the cons.  :(

jperana replied to your post: whats a good photo editing program for macs?

Free but why not try the defaults? iPhoto? hehe!

This is true, though I consider iPhoto to be more “processing” rather than “editing” or “manipulation.” It doesn’t offer things like layers, brushes, filters (etc) that one normally uses when “editing” a photo.

Do you know of any good iPhoto alternatives?

iView is a great one. Mareen recommends it :)

If you’ve got iPhoto ‘09, collages are hiding in an unlikely place.

  1. Click the + button
  2. Select Card
  3. In the Card section, there’s a Picture Collage option. Go ahead and pick that and if you want Postcard or Greeting Card from the pulldown menu. Probably Postcard. Click Choose
  4. Now you’ll have a new item in the left side under Keepsakes. Drag photos to it that you want in your collage and then pick your options for background, design and orientation. Using settings, you can change up your fonts.
  5. Get things how you want it and you can either order a professional job from Apple for not much money or you can print it out yourself :)

If this isn’t quite what you’re looking for, I notice that you said a lot of your pictures were on Flickr. Well, Flickr has some great apps for doing this sort of stuff. Check out their App Garden here.

I’m not sure what was supposed to come after “because” there, but check out Apple’s site here for help on photos. They’ve got loads of videos on how to do various things with your photos.

If books are more your style (for a lot of things I prefer them because you can highlight and dog-ear those pages) check out “The Missing Manual” series of books. You can find them on Amazon here. I’ve always found them to be complete and great help.

You’re right in that it doesn’t look like iPhoto makes your original photos accessible in the Finder. iPhoto’s catalog contents remain hidden in the most recent versions. This is to prevent you from mucking things up, but also can be a hassle when you really just want to see the pictures themselves.

iPhoto may not be right for you if this is the case. iPhoto is great for editing for entry-level type stuff, but if you want to just get at your photos, organizing them into folders manually may be the best way for you.

It’s all in how you work.

Mareen put together a post regarding this on her photography tips tumblelog, snpsht. Take a look!
