It’s called, wait for it…. “Mail” What about the native app wasn’t cutting it for you?
I’d verify that all of your account settings are correct. Hopefully you set up GMail to be an IMAP account (instead of POP) so all of your mail automatically remains on the server in case your Mac dies an unfavorable death.
The section you’re most interested in your case is the outgoing mail server.
Almost sounds like you’ve got a port number off or something. Or maybe SSL not enabled when you should. Or, you’ve got SSL setup but using the non-SSL port.
I’d also take a look in Console to see if Mail is throwing any errors in the background.
There’s the built-in Apple Mail that you’ve got, Thunderbird (by the folks who make Firefox) for free, there’s Entourage as a part of Microsoft Office. Those are the big ones that people use.
It sounds like if you’re having trouble sending your SMTP settings need tweaking.
Myself, I use Gmail. So, I set up a filter that applies a label for anything that comes from Amazon. Gmail treats labels similar to folders so they all end up in one spot over on the side of my screen. This way, I don’t have to mark them as spam and go looking through my junk or trash folders.
Most email clients have filter or rule functions. Check it out and you won’t miss that special deal on socks. :)
