The native app is great, I love everything about it, but I use it for my hotmail account. I'm looking for one that has all the same functions that I can use with my gmail account.

iOS 4 lets you set up multiple email accounts. See Apple’s article.

It’s called, wait for it…. “Mail” What about the native app wasn’t cutting it for you?

my mac mail app will not send messages! it says "cannot send messages using server"

i use Gmail.
what exactly does this mean?

I’d verify that all of your account settings are correct. Hopefully you set up GMail to be an IMAP account (instead of POP) so all of your mail automatically remains on the server in case your Mac dies an unfavorable death.

The section you’re most interested in your case is the outgoing mail server.

My friend has a brand new (last month or so) MacBook, but having Mail problems. She's set it up with a Gmail account (which she only got, again, in the last month or so), but is having trouble sending and receiving.

Even for simple, one line, text emails, the Outbox is appearing for hours, and the 'Outgoing message' bar never disappearing - it keeps getting stuck. In contrast, I never even get to see my Outbox!

I also use Gmail through Mail, so she brought her Mac to mine to test it with my network. Same network, same settings, same Mail preferences, same Account preferences, same server settings - the whole shabang. But it's still not working.

She's in her final year at school and applying for uni, so naturally doesn't want to risk any important UCAS emails not sending or coming in properly. She'd also be happier not to use the browser, just for convenience.

I'm usually the go-to guy for Mac issues, but I'm stumped, absolutely nonplussed. Any idea what the issue is? Cheers, as always!

Almost sounds like you’ve got a port number off or something. Or maybe SSL not enabled when you should. Or, you’ve got SSL setup but using the non-SSL port.

I’d also take a look in Console to see if Mail is throwing any errors in the background.

What Email clients would you suggest for use on a MacBook? My university's email system is Window's Live (pretty much the same as hotmail) and I'd love to use something like MacMail to send and recieve emails. FYI I have MacMail now and it will let me receive but not send emails from the account.

There’s the built-in Apple Mail that you’ve got, Thunderbird (by the folks who make Firefox) for free, there’s Entourage as a part of Microsoft Office. Those are the big ones that people use.

It sounds like if you’re having trouble sending your SMTP settings need tweaking.

I noticed you recommended sending anything from Amazon into a specific folder. How do I set that up? I want to keep the Prime membership (mostly for the free two day shipping) but I don't want to risk missing something important for school that gets buried underneath "SOCKS! COOL! 50% OFF" haha.

Myself, I use Gmail. So, I set up a filter that applies a label for anything that comes from Amazon. Gmail treats labels similar to folders so they all end up in one spot over on the side of my screen. This way, I don’t have to mark them as spam and go looking through my junk or trash folders.

Most email clients have filter or rule functions. Check it out and you won’t miss that special deal on socks. :)
