This is going to be the dumbest question you'll ever receive, I'm warning you now. About two seconds ago, my mac decided to drop from my bed onto my floor- about a 2-2.5 foot drop. This is the first time it's fallen. How significant is the damage going to be if there is any at all? Im in a state of panic right now.

Well, if it’s got a solid state drive in it like the MacBook Air, your data is likely fine.

If you’ve got a normal hard drive in it there’s a chance the drive heads clanged against the platter possibly damaging the drive, but if it’s a Mac that’s been made in the last 5 or 6 years it has something called a Sudden Motion Sensor whereby if your Mac detects a drop (with accelerometers) it will park the hard drive so that it has a greatly reduced chance of damaging your data on the drive.

Physical damage (like dents) are too unpredictable for me to say if other components are ok. If you had things plugged into the ports, you have a greater chance of damaging the logic board, but otherwise, give it a good look and note any damage sustained. If you’ve got some, drop me a note and we’ll see what’s what.

About two months ago, I spilled something near my optical drive, and it got inside. I took my macbook pro to the genius bar and I don't remember the exact price, but I think the guy said it would cost about $1000 to fix. That sounds kinda crazy to me, considering that would mean I'd be paying half of what I paid for the entire macbook itself, including AppleCare. Does that sound like a reasonable price to you? :/

Reasonable? No not really, but then again, Apple does tend to punish you when you’ve had less than a glorious moment with your Mac.

It sounds like more than just the optical drive if it’s $1000. Likely Tier-3 which usually involves the logic board of the machine.

Sorry!

One thing I’d check into is your credit card that you bought it on (if applicable) and homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. For instance, my homeowner’s policy covers my computers, even if there’s accidental damage to them. Yes, I have to pay my deductible, but it’s way less than paying for a new machine or the repair you’ve got there.

I’d check out that route.
