Amazon Web Services Free Usage Tier

vb:

To help new AWS customers get started in the cloud, AWS is introducing a free usage tier. New AWS customers will be able to run a free Amazon EC2 Micro Instance for a year, while also leveraging a free usage tier for Amazon S3, Amazon Elastic Block Store, Amazon Elastic Load Balancing, and AWS data transfer. AWS’s free usage tier can be used for anything you want to run in the cloud: launch new applications, test existing applications in the cloud, or simply gain hands-on experience with AWS.

Hey geeks, go get your geek on for free.

Amazon Appstore an excellent work in progress ... now about that tablet rumor | Andy Ihnatko

Listen to me: Jeff Bezos has his own space program. I never tire of saying that. This is clearly not a man who’s intimidated by the scale of a project or the expense. If there’s a real chance of success, he’s willing to pour in the money, the focus and the motivation that are necessary for his people make it happen.

Hi SweetMacTips! Your recent free Amazon Prime account post caught my eye and I looked it up and noticed there's actually some fine print in that otherwise awesome deal. According to this page on amazon <http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200500380>, it says, "When you sign up for Amazon Student, you'll receive e-mail alerts for discounts and promotions. If you don't want any more Amazon Student e-mails, you may cancel your Amazon Student membership. If you do this, your Amazon Prime benefits will also end when the membership is canceled."

So basically, when you sign up, they have free reign to spam your .edu address. Just thought it was an important caveat that people might overlook.

That’s a good point. All the better to set up a rule to throw anything from Amazon into a certain mail folder :)

Amazon Prime

Again, not purely a Mac tip, but a great one to share.

Check out Amazon Prime. It can save you a ton of money and frustration.  Prime is a yearly subscription of $80 and basically gives you free second day shipping on anything coming directly from Amazon.  You can actually have 4 people on the same Prime account, so if you split it, it actually only costs you $20 a year!

Perfect example, I needed a new HD digital camcorder.  I settled on the Canon HF 200 which is $700 at my local BestBuy. Amazon had it for $520. But, I need it in time for Sunday for an important event. In steps my Prime. I upgraded my shipping from my second day (which would get it to me on Monday - not bad!) to next day with Saturday delivery. I also added on a 16 GB flash card for the camera. All of it will be delivered tomorrow, a Saturday, to my house.

How much total?

$576.

Even if I was paying the full price $80 for Prime, it would have just paid for itself.  And, most importantly, I don’t have to go to BestBuy and deal with the horde.
