My macbook kept randomly turning black. Everyone said that there was something wrong with the inverterboard. I brought it to the apple genius bar and they said it would probably cost about $70. They just called me and told me that what they tried to do didn't work and it cost about $35, but now they were going to try and fix the screen which they said would cost $300. This all seems like a lot of money. Are they ripping me off? WHat do you think is wrong with it?

Display issues generally are one of 3 components:

  • Display panel itself
  • Main Logic Board (issue with the video subsystem)
  • Components between the two including the Inverter board

If it’s something like an inverter board (generally no backlight but there’s actually an image on the screen) you’re looking at the cheapest repair there. Main Logic Board or display panel are costly. It’s not that they’re ripping you off, it’s that they weren’t exactly sure which component had gone wonky.
It also sounds like they may not have properly set the expectation of what it could cost vs what you’d like it to cost.

Repairs like this are the #1 reason to buy AppleCare - one repair of a Main Logic Board out of warranty is easily enough to buy AppleCare.

My ipod nano died on the tube, i went to apple and the expert on the ground level said 'go upstairs and talk to my colleage' so i went upstairs and talked to the 'genuis' who asked me to book a genuis appointment, i dont know about other people but i dont have the time to do this. if i told you more about it would you be able to prehaps help?

I’d say book yourself an appointment.  The reservation system is there to provide some order to the chaos that the Bar can be. If you don’t have time today, that’s fine. You can book an appointment a few days out and do it from home.  Go here find your local store and make an appointment.

You wouldn’t go to an obviously busy restaurant and expect to be seated right away would you?

I found my old iBook & when I went to turn it on I realized it's stuck on the grey screen of death.
I want to wipe it & use it as a backup for some other junk that I don't want to really put on my MacBook, but I don't have the OS X disk that came with it.
The Apple Care expired, but how much would it cost me to have Apple wipe it for me?

Your local Genius Bar should be able to handle that for you. Way back when I was doing that, it would probably fall under an $85 charge to restore it back to factory software but it’s been a long time since I’ve done that. Worst comes to worst, take it in and they can tell you how much. You can always decline.

If you take a look at this thread on Apple’s discussion site, you’ll see that there seems to be a bit of this going around and that Apple hasn’t officially addressed it yet.

The problem seems to be completely independent of what OS is running on the machine (10.5.x or 10.6.x). It sounds to me at face value to be a potential hardware issue.

What I’d advise is to take your machine to your local Genius Bar and explain the situation. Mention that there’s some talk on the discussion boards about it. Just because Apple hasn’t mentioned anything public doesn’t mean that they don’t know what’s going on and how to fix it. Genii at the bar have access to some of this information (though they can’t share it with you) and may know what causes it.

Apple’s famous for their secrecy and this extends to service issues they may not want to publicly disclose, which I don’t agree with when it comes to service.
