The way to solve it is to uncheck the box in preferences that says "Automatically retrieve song names from the Internet". For some reason, that fixes it.

This is true, though I consider iPhoto to be more “processing” rather than “editing” or “manipulation.” It doesn’t offer things like layers, brushes, filters (etc) that one normally uses when “editing” a photo.
