hello, what media player do you recommend for my mac? :) i have some avi files that can't be played by quicktime

You can go a couple ways with this one:

  1. Play the files in a different player. I use VLC - it’s your swiss army knife of media players on the Mac.
  2. Give QuickTime the codecs it needs to play the files. In this case, I’d use Perian. This will expand the file types that QuickTime can play. It’s a little old, but it does seem to still work in Snow Leopard.

Either solution works :)

Hi, I've been reading every single of your tips for a while now, but now I have a question! You mentioned the dialogue box that pops up when you're running on reserve battery power. I've seen the box ever since the week I got my MBP, but the last two weeks, I haven't seen it. My MBP will just go black and die. :( Also, sometimes when I plug my external monitor in, my MBP freezes and I have to hard reboot (is that when you hold the power key down?). The problem is, I often forget to save my documents, which pisses me off. Although, I've been using WorkSaver to automatically save my work now. So yeah. Thanks!

You may want to reset the SMC. The System Management Controller is in charge of a lot of low-level stuff including power management. It also controls your fans, for instance.

Resetting the SMC may solve the external monitor issue, but if not, I’d definitely get that looked at. Totally not normal.

Good luck!

ive had my 13 inch macbook pro for almost a year now and have been having issues with filling up my hard drive. (i have 14 movies in my itunes and three times as many hours of tv.) i was wondering if you knew how i could check the amount of memory used vs. the amount of memory free.

If you select your hard drive on the desktop and from the File menu select Get Info you’ll see a couple of key number: Capacity and Available. Self explanatory what each one is.

Ok, that’s all well and good, but how do you figure out what’s taking up so much space? I use a little utility called Disk Inventory X. It’s quite simple. It scans your hard drive and creates a visual representation of your files and folder so you can see what to clean up.

Hi, I've been following your blog for quite some time now and I find it very useful when I want to find out something about my mac. I'm not sure if someone has already asked this before, but I was wondering why my macbook heats up so much. I've had my macbook for 4months already. For the first few months it hasn't been heating up no matter how long I use it, charging or not. But recently, it has always been heating up even if I just use Text edit or Photoshop. Or mostly when I watch movies on my mac, it really becomes hot. The battery only lasts for 4 hours now. :( Why does it heat up so much? Do you have any tips on how to improve the battery life too? Thank you very much, and keep up the good work, Sir.

You’ve actually described some actions that could cause it to heat up normally. Things like Photoshop and watching DVDs can cause your machine to heat up and as a result, your fan to come on.

What I’d be worried about is your Mac getting too hot. Your Mac has an operating temperature range and your local Genius Bar can certainly tell you if it’s getting out of that range, indicating a problem (perhaps with a fan or heatsink).

4 hours of battery actually isn’t bad depending on what you’re doing. If you’re watching DVDs or doing other CPU-heavy things, your battery life will be shorter than if you were just surfing Tumblr.

Hi, I seem to have a huge problem with my Finder. I reinstalled SL in december, and doing clean install's of everything. Since then I have been unable to get any applications to stay in the toolbar. I frequently use TermHere and MateDot in the toolbar, but they only stay in the toolbar till next restart. Other problem with Finder is that some of my folder's don't get the default "View options". All folders that I manually change the options for, keep the options, but sometimes new folders or old folders just don't have the right options enabled. It's tiering to do manually for all folders. Can you help me with any of these problems?

It almost sounds like a permissions problem to me. If permissions in your home folder are squirreled up, you’ll actually be using a default set of permissions that you can make temporary changes. Those changes get flushed when you reboot.

Try doing a repair permissions and see how that goes. I’d also be curious to see if it’s a problem just with your user account. Try making another account and see if it has the same problem. If not, the issue lies somewhere in your user folder (e.g. permissions). If the issue remains, it’s an OS-wide issue that may be a bit trickier to figure out. Let me know how it goes.

I found my old iBook & when I went to turn it on I realized it's stuck on the grey screen of death. I want to wipe it & use it as a backup for some other junk that I don't want to really put on my MacBook, but I don't have the OS X disk that came with it. The Apple Care expired, but how much would it cost me to have Apple wipe it for me?

Your local Genius Bar should be able to handle that for you. Way back when I was doing that, it would probably fall under an $85 charge to restore it back to factory software but it’s been a long time since I’ve done that. Worst comes to worst, take it in and they can tell you how much. You can always decline.

Happy Mac-ing

Hey. I bought my Macbook Pro about a month ago, (Just after they updated them) and I use it literally all the time, but I was wondering, what's the best way to ensure the battery lasts as long as possible? & is it detrimental to the battery to keep the Macbook on charge all the time?

Apple recommends exercising your battery at least once a month by draining it down to where it warns you to plug it in. Since that’s what Apple recommends, it should be enough, but I’d be more likely to do it more than that.

Thanks SweetMacTips for the information. I installed Xcode from my Snow Leopard disc and it works like a charm. I wanted a second opinion on another question though: I was wondering if I should go ahead an upgrade to a Macbook pro 13 inch or keep my Macbook for college (only have two years left) and then after I graduate upgrade to a Macbook Pro 15 inch. Which one should I do? Thanks again, Lostnewyorker : ) P.S. I asked iTunes if they could refund my movies and it partially worked! I do have the majority of my movies back, but some had copyright refunding issues I don't know, but the question I asked you and answered myself worked! : )

Glad to hear XCode set you right.

Regarding a new computer buy, I guess the thing to think of is if your current MacBook fits your needs. If it does, or you can limp through, I’d say stick with it. If your MacBook is the very first MacBook and it’s approaching 4 years, then yeah, it may be time to pony up. If it’s only 2 years old now, I’d be likely to stick it out.

Also, why not just go for a 15” MacBook Pro now? I’m assuming starving-college-student thing… :)

I really suck at computer stuff so I was wondering if this link would work to format the WD to FAT 32 http://www.ehow.com/how_5566434_format-passport-mac-_amp_-pc.html

Yep, that’ll do it :)

how to i get my stuff off my macpro that has the black screen of death?

Well, there are varying degrees of black screen of death. You sure it’s not just off?  ;)

You can try booting up holding the T key. This will put the Mac Pro into target disk mode and basically turn it into a giant external hard drive. If you plug the Mac Pro into another Mac via a FireWire cable, (if successful) you’ll see the hard drives on the Mac and can pull off your data.

Alternatively, you can just remove your hard drive and plug it into an external drive enclosure. Then, plug it into a functioning Mac and pull your stuff off it.

Good luck!

Visit the AppleStore (without actually going to the AppleStore)

Did you know that you can talk to the same helpful folks at the AppleStore right from your couch? No, don’t call them up and harass them over the phone. Chat with them!

Go to the AppleStore online and select a product. After a few seconds, during usual business hours, you’ll see a “chat” button pop up. I bet you never noticed it before.

image

A chat box will pop up and you’ll be connected to a live human being! In my case, Pat.

image

In my case, I was trying to decide between a MacBook and 13” MacBook Pro

image

After a few minutes, I actually settled on the MacBook Pro because of a few features that I hadn’t thought of: backlit keyboard and twice the RAM capability. Pat helped me get there.

image

After a few minutes, I was sold.

Hope the wife likes it…

Thousands flock to see image of Steve Jobs on French toast | Scoopertino  → scoopertino.com

I just discovered Scoopertino, but maybe some of you know about it already. Some pretty funny Apple stuff, that.  ”All the news that’s fit to fabricate” is one line they’re using.

Think The Onion, but for Apple.

Is it normal that I have to restart my Mac every week? Everybody says it can go for weeks without rebooting; the longest I have gone is 8 days - it always hangs after a few days or gets stuck on a blue screen...is something wrong with my Mac? I've tried resetting the pram but same results. Should I take it back?

I don’t know if anything is necessarily wrong, it really depends on the make up of your machine’s software load.

Some software is well written and plays well, others, not so much. Sometimes you’ll have a piece of software that takes up a lot of memory and doesn’t give it back properly *cough* Firefox *cough* (though I think that was fixed) and that can lead to stalls and freeze-ups that require a reboot.

My wife’s MacBook usually goes about a week between reboots and everything’s fine. My MacBook Pro for work typically goes months before I reboot it (usually from a software update).

It’s really all in how you’re running.

Thanks for answering my last question so quickly. :) I just have one more. When I got my top cover replaced, I noticed one of the screws were slightly askew and now it's cracked. what do you suggest i do? thanks again.

No problem. I’m sure me answering two of your questions in a rather quick fashion is really going to bug the crap out of that anonymous jackass.

At any rate, now that that’s out of my system, screws askew should be pointed out when you bring your baby in for service. It’s important to note because if they were cross-threaded, there may be damage to the frame that they need to take care of in order to properly repair it.

Sounds to me like someone was in a rush when they were doing your machine.

Should I bother updating to Snow Leopard? (My mac came with Leopard)

I generally recommend going with the latest OS that your hardware can handle. In the case of Snow Leopard, it’s a no-brainer at $30. You’ll probably notice your Mac become a bit more nimble and you may gain a little bit of hard drive space (as it sheds all of that PowerPC supported code).

Some of the nice polish that Apple threw on the OS is nice to have as well.

if i got applecare, would that cover the 'wear and tear' of my macbook? also, the "top cover" as they call it, or the plastic where the magnet locks meet, on my macbook were replaced last december, i think (a long piece broke off). i got it replaced and now it's broken again. i'm still in warranty, you think i could still get it replaced for free?

Depends.

The MacBook (white design before they went to the new unibody design) has a few known case defects that Apple will cover. The top case is a primary part that Apple often replaces on the MacBook. As far as I know, Apple’s gone through a few re-designs on that part in attempts to improve the reliability of it. Pieces “flaking” off of the front edge of the top case are pretty common.

I'm thinking about upgrading my iPod touch, I know there is a new iPhone coming out in June, is there any plans for a new iPod touch anytime soon?

Figuring out what Apple’s going to do involves all sorts of voodoo. If I had to guess, and well, I do, there’s something up their sleeves. The current iPod Touch was released in Sept 2009, so it’s getting to about a year old. Even in that case, the update wasn’t terribly significant.

Apple’s Back-To-School rebate just started back up where they throw in an iPod with a Mac purchase for students/staff/faculty so they may be trying to clear out the inventory getting ready for a refresh.

Maybe this time they’ll throw a camera on it.

I'd recommend you if you actually answered one of my questions. Answer 10 questions a day, that'll cut down on your messages.

Holy crap someone needs some attention.  Ready for this?

You’re the reason I just switched off anonymous ask.

Happy?

Douchebag.

My keyboard on my MacBook has been acting up. Sometimes when I press certain keys, multiple characters show up! Pressing '7' will get me '57' instead, or hitting 'm' the wrong way gets me a 'mb'. Coincidentally, right now it's perfectly fine. But this can get frustrating

Sounds to me like your keyboard needs to be swapped out.
